So, about a month ago, Apple released the latest iteration of their iPhone, and recently updated (and renamed) their latest version of their portable devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) operating system, iOS 4.
What is new? Apple calls this an A-level upgrade, updating everything but the form factor (height and width). It is also now officially the thinnest mobile phone on the planet.
Gone now are the curvy lines of the plastic iPhone 3G and 3GS, the iPhone 4 being more angular, flat and accented with its glass and aluminum construction (the Apple look of the iMac and iPad lines). The front and back are now both constructed with glass (aluminosilicate), sandwiching a stainless steel frame that holds all the internals together. The aluminosilicate glass is supposed to be scratch-proof and tough, though of course not shatter proof (realistic expectations, people!).
Biggest plus is the high-resolution display (320+ pixels per inch), making the individual pixels non-distinguishable by the "average" retina from a typical distance a person holds a phone screen from their face. The "retina display" is by all accounts gorgeous and looks for all intents and purposes like a printed page.
A front facing camera for videoconferencing ("Facetime" VDO calls over wifi to another iPhone 4), and an upgraded rear facing camera (5 MP with flash with HD VDO capability) make the iPhone an even more compelling image (stills and movies) creation devise.
An A4 chip (iPad speed) with 512 MB of RAM (up from 256 MB) make sure multi-tasking (Apple's version) is implemented smoothly. Folders and a unified inbox (e-mail from several e-mail accounts presented in one inbox) in the mail app round out some of the more compelling features in the new iOS, which is a free upgrade for current iPhone and iPod Touch owners.
Keeping up with Apple's upgrade cycle is a struggle, but they more than most can come up with reasons to make you try, LOL! It is amazing, but next to the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS looks clunky and old. Imagine all the drooling that occurred just 1 or 2 years ago with the release of that form factor and tell me how that is possible in such a short time. Jony, I don't know whether to laugh or cry!
