Thoughts on iOS 4.0

So, I had my jailbroken 3GS updated to iOS 4.0 last weekend and have the following thoughts from a week of use:

a. The general performance is very good on my 3GS; everything is fluid, with very little delays (certainly not any more than 3.x).

b. I like the aesthetic changes, ie ability to set lock screen and home screen wallpapers separately.

c. Folders are great; easy to set up, rename and remove. They add much more flexibility to the user experience.

d. I'm still getting used to the multi-tasking (quick switching to backgrounding apps). It is a pretty useful feature and does save time if you like, or need, to switch between apps very often. I also use SBSettings, so I can see how much free memory I have and have to say backgrounding can reduce your free memory quite significantly and rather quickly. I haven't had problems with apps quitting on me, so I think I must learn to trust the OS to manage the phone's resources.

In related news, I also updated biteSMS to the latest version (4.9.3) and I have to say that it is my favorite app on my iPhone. In addition to the basics, ie SMSing from anywhere, including lock screen, function, there are new aesthetic changes. SMS notifications now include a photo ID, and there is now also a notification balloon with number badge added to the task bar for unread messages.

Bottom line? My year old 3GS feels like a new phone!
